What is Makaton?

Makaton is a multi-modal communication programme that uses signs and symbols alongside speech. Currently over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton, either as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech. Makaton is used by individuals with communication and learning difficulties in their everyday lives at home, at school and in the community around them. Families, friends, teachers and a wide range of professionals also use Makaton regularly, and awareness of Makaton as a means of communicating is growing.

Let's talk Makaton!

Level 1 is the starting point for your Makaton journey

Level 1 is recommended for people who need to use Makaton at home and in their work, to develop the communication skills of others.

Level 1 provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme and a wider understanding of learning and communication difficulties.

The Level 1 Workshop includes how to start using Makaton in everyday situations; immediate needs, home, familiar people, food, events, activities and objects. You will also discover hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use to maximise communication.

What's next?

After completing Level 1 training you can continue on your Makaton journey by attending Level 2 training.
